Louisville Grows is seeking a dedicated and passionate Horticulture Assistant to join our team. The ideal candidate will possess a strong work ethic, a positive attitude, and the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse outdoor environment. As a Horticulture Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting our urban forestry and horticulture initiatives, assisting with tree planting, maintenance, and community engagement activities.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Participate in safety and equipment use training, adhering strictly to safety policies and procedures.
  • Arrive on time for scheduled activities, prepared to work safely and productively; accurately record hours worked.
  • Prepare tools and equipment for use, clean them after each task is completed, and store them properly.
  • Report any damaged equipment or missing supplies to the Urban Forestry Manager.
  • Follow instructions from the Urban Forestry Manager to efficiently perform and manage tasks following program standards and guidelines.
  • Communicate professionally with neighborhood residents and community partners, relaying concerns or questions to the Urban Forestry Manager as needed.
  • Assist in entering data into spreadsheets and maintaining accurate records.
  • Collaborate effectively with staff, Citizen Foresters, and volunteers.
  • Provide labor for tree delivery, staging, and planting during seasonal planting events, including mulching, staking, and inspecting trees.
  • Water trees weekly during summer months and assist with tree pruning, disease prevention, fruit production, harvesting, and property maintenance of approximately 200 trees.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.




Qualifications:

  • Must possess a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and ability to work well within a team.
  • Strong communication skills and practical listening abilities are essential.
  • Ability to take direction, work independently, and thrive in a diverse work environment.
  • Enjoyment of outdoor work and willingness to work in various weather conditions.
  • Proactive mindset with the ability to ask for help and offer assistance; always seeking solutions.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older with a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record as determined by our insurance carrier.
  • Physical ability to frequently climb, bend, stoop, twist, and lift to 50 pounds.

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of social and food justice issues in Louisville.
  • Citizen Forester certification (LG Program: www.louisvillegrows.org/urban-forestry/forestry-training).
  • Experience with manual labor and safe use of tools.
  • Experience in landscaping or tree maintenance.
  • High School diploma
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office and Google applications.
